Italy’s turn is undoubtedly the toughest of the three big laps, with a relentless route, brutal climbs and unpredictable conditions that can take runners to fight a heat wave at the beginning of a stage and against snow when reaching the top.
Bringing one of its four winning meillots is, therefore, a true indicator of the skills of a corridor. But what is the difference between pink, blue, purple and white jerseys? And how does each different competition work?
01
What do the mailts of the Italian turn mean?
Every year there are four jerseys at stake in the Tour of Italy, and they are all very close competitions that last the full three weeks of the great return.

El Maillot Rosa He is the most famous in the quartet and takes the leader of the general classification (the best time accumulated at the end of the stage of the previous day); Whoever takes it in the final stage of Rome, on June 1, will have proclaimed the winner of this year’s Italian turn.
THE WHITE MAILLOT (BIANCO) It works similar to pink in the sense that it is based on the best accumulated time, but it is for the best young corridor and is limited to runners 25 years or less at the beginning of the year.
He maillot azul (azzura) It is carried by the corridor that has accumulated more points of king of the mountain, and therefore is the best climber in the race.
For its part, the Mallot Morado (Ciclamino) It is carried by the corridor with more points, which are granted in the intermediate sprints and in the stage finals, which makes it the best Sprinter.

Pink mailot – general classification
The Rosa Maglia is granted to the leader of the general classification of the Italian turn. It is the most important competition of the great Italian round, and it is considered that the carrier of the Maglia Rosa at the end of stage 21 has won the career of that year.
This year, Primož Rogličof the Red Bull – Bora – Hansgrohe, aspires to the second Rosa Maglia of his career, after having won it once in 2023. The Slovenian would become the first more than 35 -year -old corridor that dresses up since 1990 if he manages to realize his favorite condition before the race.

An additional factor this year is the introduction of the Red Bull KMa new intermediate sprint stretch in each highway stage that gives up to six seconds of bonus in the fight for Rosa Maglia.
03
Blue Maillot – Mountain
The blue jersey is one of the two points of points of the Italian turn and favors climbers. Points are granted to those that cross the top of each of the categorized rises of the race in the head group (from the first nine runners in Cimma Copi to the first three in the rises of category four), and the bearer of the blue jersey is the corridor with the most accumulated points at the end of the race of the previous day.

As there are no points of the mountain king available in stage 21, as is the case with the pink and white jerseys, this competition will be decided at the top of Sestrière (Vialattea), the end of stage 20.
04
Purple male – points
The purple jersey is carried by the corridor that has accumulated more points in the 21 stages of the race. The points are granted at the end of each stage on the road and during the intermediate sprints that are played every day.

The number of points at stake varies depending on the route of each stage, with more points at stake in the flat and wavy stages than in the mountainous days with arrivals at the top. Therefore, the competition favors the squad sprinters, with previous winners such as Mark Cavendish, Elia Viviani and Peter Sagan.
05
White Maillot – Best Young Runner
In introduced for the first time in 2007, the white jaw of the turn works in the same way as the pink jersey and is granted to the corridor of 25 years or less at the beginning of the year with the lowest accumulated time.

Although he is the least disputed of the four jerseys of the race, he can often be an indicator of runners with a promising future ahead, and in some cases it can even be won by those of Rosa, as in the case of Egan Bernal (2021) and Tao Geoghegan Hart (2020).

The Red Bull Km: How does it affect the points?
The Red Bull Km will give more wings to the Italian turn
© Red Bull
Nineinue of the 21 stages of this year’s edition, scheduled from May 9 to June 1, will have one kilometer from the Red Bull brand, which will serve as a “entrance door” to the only intermediate sprint that counts for the general classification: the first three runners who cross the kilometer exit door will win six, four and two seconds, respectively.
Since the Red Bull Km will be the only intermediate point of the race that grants seconds of bonus for the general classification -along with the end of the stage, where the winner obtains a bonus of 10 seconds -, his goal is to turn fierce battles inside the squad.
