• Most affected fauna: amphibians, reptiles, small mammals and birds
Morelia, Michoacán, April 20, 2025.- The Forest Commission of the State of Michoacán (Cofom) informs that during forest fires in addition to vegetation, microorganisms and animals are also affected, mainly small mammals and birds in the period of nesting and parenting.
According to a report made by the COFOM, the fauna affected by forest fires are mainly the amphibians, reptiles, birds and small mammals with short displacements, of which some are considered in danger of extinction such as the jaguar.
-Given this situation, since 2024, the Cofom Wildlife Department implemented a monitoring project in areas affected by forest fires by trap cameras. The objective is to identify the present species and evaluate the impact on these areas, although obtaining conclusive data is still in process.
In addition, according to the head of the COFOM, Martha Beatriz Rendón López, the large fires also kill microorganisms that keep the earth nourished, causing soil erosion, making it difficult to renew plants and implying massive damage to the ecosystem.
This is why Cofom reiterates the importance of avoiding fire in forest areas at all times, as well as immediately reporting 911 for timely care.
