Miami, May 7 (EFE) .- The Inter-American press Society (SIP) on Wednesday the murder of the journalist Raúl Celis, of Radio La Karibeña, in which it would be the second homicide of a reporter in that country so far this year.
The organization, based in Miami, urged the Peruvian authorities to carry out an investigation to identify, judge and punish those responsible.
The journalist and radio driver was killed on Wednesday for alleged hitmen in the Amazon city of Iquitos (northeast of the country), when he had stopped to buy a newspaper before arriving at the station to drive the morning news, according to the RPP station reported.
“We deeply alarm the resurgence of violence against journalists in Peru,” said José Roberto Dutriz, president of the SIP.
“We exhort the authorities to fulfill their duty to clarify this crime and guarantee justice so that facts like this are not unpunished,” he added.
The fact adds to the murder even without clarifying Gastón Medina, director of Cadena Sur TV, who was killed last January in front of his home in the city of Ica.
Martha Ramos, president of the SIP Press and Information Commission, highlighted the need to combat impunity. “When the murder of a journalist is without punishment, a message of permissiveness is sent that encourages new attacks. The State must act firmly to protect the informative work and integrity of those who exercise it,” he said.
Celis López was known for his critical and frontal style, and stood out for his complaints about corruption, extortion and crime in the region. According to the local press, he had not received threats before the attack.
