Diego Maradona’s children request the transfer of the body to a mausoleum for security reasons and to be able to pay tribute

(Reuters) — The children of Diego Maradona presented a request this Thursday before the Argentine Justice to transfer the body of the former soccer great “to a much safer place” and so that fans can “pay tribute” in a mausoleum.

Maradona’s remains lie in a private cemetery on the outskirts of Buenos Aires, where he was transferred in November 2020 in a massive funeral procession. Only family members can enter the cemetery.

The mausoleum, called “Memorial del Diez,” is located behind the Casa Rosada, headquarters of the executive branch of the Argentine government, and will be open to the public, Verónica Ojeda, mother of Maradona’s youngest son, told local media.

“All the heirs request by common agreement that the transfer be authorized to their next destination of eternal rest (…) in a much safer place than the current one,” says the note presented to the court signed by Dalma and Gianinna Maradona, and Ojeda. in the name of Diego Maradona Jr.

“And so that all the Argentine people and citizens of the world can pay tribute to our father who was the greatest Argentine idol,” he adds.

The relocation will occur around October 30, the birth date of Argentina’s 1986 world champion, one of the family’s lawyers told reporters.

Maradona died at the age of 60 in November 2020 due to a heart attack. Fans of Napoli and the Argentine national team worshiped him as the “god of football.”
