I wasn’t even aware that this could be reported, it was the 80s. “Who was going to believe me.” This is how hard is the story of one of the two former athletes who, in El País, have revealed the alleged abuses they suffered, as minors, by Carlos Gil Pérez, an eminence in Spanish athletics who was technical director of the RFEA between 1978 and 1988.
One of the athletes, with the initials FJBJ, has signed an affidavit with the account of his accusations but prefers to remain anonymous since he has never told anything to his family and wants to protect them. The other alleged victim prefers not to make her name known but confirms what was said by the first: she was not from Gil Pérez’s group, but she did regularly go to his house and confirms that they watched porn movies and he touched them.. Two other athletes of the time confirm that Gil Pérez’s house was a regular meeting point, one of them also refers to porn films, but neither witnessed abuse.
FJBJ, who is now 57 years old, reveals the reasons that led him to report the abuse now, so many years later and with the accused deceased. The first of them is that he now has the necessary maturity that he did not have as a teenager; the second, the tributes that continually remind her of what she went through. In Salamanca, where he lived, a tournament named after him is held every year, the Carlos Gil Pérez Memorial, which has been in its 25th edition. All of this stirs FJBJ inside: “That tribute painting hurts me. I don’t want to find a pavilion with his name on it, nor a plaque on his street. Because it is the name of a pedophile who abused me. He disgusts me every time I walk past him. That’s why I had the need to tell it.”
