CHICAGO — Jorge Mateo hit a go-ahead three-run homer, and the Baltimore Orioles withstood a Chicago comeback attempt to beat the White Sox 8-6 on Thursday.

The game ended with an infield fly ball and an interference call.

Chicago, trailing 8-2 entering the bottom of the ninth inning, scored four times.

With runners on first and second and one out, Andrew Benintendi hit a popout to shortstop Gunnar Henderson. The umpires called a fly ball in the infield and ruled that the runner at second base, Andrew Vaughn, interfered with Henderson.

The runner was called out, ending the game and Chicago’s attack. Pedro Grifol, Cuban manager of the White Sox, arrived to argue unsuccessfully and the umpires left the field.

Anthony Santander also homered, while Adley Rutschmann added three RBIs for Baltimore, which snapped a three-game losing streak after being swept by St. Louis at the start of a seven-game road trip.

For the Orioles, Venezuelan Santander was 1 for 5 with one run scored and one RBI. The Dominican Mateo was 2-1 with two runs scored and three RBIs.
