ANAHEIM — Jo Adell doubled and scored the tiebreaking run with two fly balls in the eighth inning, leading the Los Angeles Angels to a 2-1 victory over the San Diego Padres on Monday night.

Tyler Anderson pitched into the seventh inning and Willie Calhoun drove in an early run with a single for the Angels, who snapped a five-game losing streak. Calhoun had a pair of the hosts’ four hits as they improved the worst home record in the majors to 8-21 in the first of a six-game home series.

Adell opened the eighth with a double against the right field wall against Adrián Morejón (1-1). Adell advanced to third on Zach Neto’s fly ball and easily scored on pinch-hitter Luis Guillorme’s long sacrifice fly to center off Jeremiah Estrada.

Manny Machado homered for the Padres, who lost their second in a row after a 5-1 comeback. San Diego’s powerful lineup was unable to score after the first inning and went 0 for 6 with runners in scoring position.

Hunter Strickland (2-1) escaped two jams before Angels closer Carlo Estevez finished his ninth save.

For the Padres, Dominicans Manny Machado was 2-1 with a run scored and an RBI and Fernando Tatis Jr. was 1-for-4.

For the Angels, Venezuelans Luis Rengifo went 1 for 3 with a run scored and Luis Guillorme an RBI.
