Italy qualified for the round of 16 of the Euro 2024 with an agonizing 1-1 draw against Croatia. The Azzurra were virtually eliminated in stoppage time, but the goal in the epilogue sent them to the next round as Spain’s companion in Group B. The duel valid for the third and final date was played at the Leipzig Stadium. The Balkans mourn the elimination.

The first danger was for the Croatian team with a shot from Luka Sucic, which forced Gianluigi Donnarumma to fly in the 4′.

Italy took a while to respond with a header from Mateo Retegui that Josko Gvardiol managed to deflect into a corner kick (20′). In the 26th minute it was Alessandro Bastoni who was able to open the account for the Azzurra, but the header found the wonderful cover of Dominik Livakociv.

Already in the second half the way was opened for the Croatians: in the 51st minute Davide Fratessi put his hand in the area (51st) and after doubts the referee went to the monkey… In the 53rd minute the penalty was decided and Luka Modric found the great stretch of Gianluigi Donnarumma, who saved the Apennines by deflecting to the side.

But the play continued and the center rained into the six-yard box found Ante Budimir, who saw Dunnarumma’s save from point-blank range. However, Modric was ready to capture the rebound and sent it in, paying the blame for the missed penalty seconds before (54′).

Towards the end, Italy tried with more desperation than football, and the lack of clarity helped Croatia maintain the slight superiority in dominance. The 1-0 for Luka Modric and company put Croatia in the next round…

Italy qualifies with seconds left at the expense of Croatia’s sadness.

Likewise, and until that moment, the current champion was left hanging. Italy had to hold on to a miracle and wait for the rest of the groups to be defined to see if they managed to get among the best third-place teams in the group… otherwise they would say goodbye to another failure for the Azzurra.

But Mattia Zaccagni’s goal was missing for the team led by Luciano Spalletti, in the seventh minute of stoppage time (90’+7). The final 1-1 score puts Italy in the round of 16 alongside Spain and Croatia is completely eliminated.
