In its debut in the Conmebol Copa América United States 2024, the Colombian team won 2-1 against Paraguay, with an excellent performance by James Rodríguez and goals from Daniel Muñoz and Jefferson Lerma. However, a play at the end of the match left a great deal of controversy.
In the 83rd minute of the match, Colombia launched an attack against Paraguay, which resulted in Yerry Mina falling in the area while trying to head in a cross from James Rodríguez. Argentine judge Darío Herrera gave the maximum penalty for the benefit of the national team.
The Guaraní team players protested, which led the judge to receive a notification from the VAR to review the play. After the replay, and in conversation with Silvio Trucco (VAR) and the Chilean Rodrigo Carvajal (AVAR), Herrera made the decision that there was no foul against the Colombian central player, which caused demonstrations in the teams led by Néstor Lorenzo.
VAR audio of the Colombia vs. match Paraguay
“In the 83rd minute, a cross into the area by the white and red team, a forward and a defender compete for the ball, producing normal contact between both for the action. The referee sanctions a penalty. The VAR, in its protocol check, using angles, speed and considerations, identifies that there is no infraction in this normal dispute of the game, so it invites the referee to a field review. The referee, upon seeing the images, decides to change his original decision of a penalty kick instead of a penalty kick and resumes with a dropped ball in favor of the defending team,” they explain in the audio.
