Leagues Cup
When Leagues Cup approached Emilio Estefan to produce this year’s tournament anthem, the renowned producer and composer knew exactly what he wanted to capture with this song.
“My idea was to create something that is important to me, and that was to show unity and different cultures,” Estefan tells Billboard about the composition and production of “Our Colors,” the official anthem of the Leagues Cup 2024. “That’s why I had artists from different cultures, to represent the unity among us Latinos and really show our diverse colors.”
The euphoric song, loaded with percussion and powerful trumpets, features the participation of Mexican mariachi star Christian Nodal, Argentine singer Abel Pintos, Cuban-American producer and multi-instrumentalist Emily Estefan (daughter of Emilio and Gloria Estefan), Taboo by Black Eyed Peas , the Colombian singer-songwriter Gusi and, from Panama, the lead singer of Rabanes, Emilio Regueira.
Estefan created a global sound that reflected the international appeal of the tournament and the diversity of the teams. The Leagues Cup had contacted other producers, but “they came back with something too local, something too Mexican or too Colombian,” explains Estefan. “I told them, ‘let me try it,’ and I produced a song that’s true to what I do. I mix sounds. I’ve been doing that since Miami Sound Machine. We became famous because we combined cultures and sounds.”
The annual Leagues Cup is an international soccer tournament that includes clubs from the United States’ Major League Soccer (MLS) and Mexico’s Liga MX. Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami is the defending champion. It’s the team Estefan, who lives in Miami, is rooting for this year, he confirms. “Inter Miami brought a lot of unity to Miami,” says the musician. “When you go to a game, you see people from all over the world.”
Shortly after the Copa América, the soccer tournament currently taking place in the United States, ends, the Leagues Cup 2024 will begin on July 26, with all matches being played in the US and Canada.
