Atlético Nacional has proven to be a fruitful breeding ground for talent in Colombian football, and the sales figures for its young players to international clubs confirm this. The most recent case is that of winger Óscar Perea, who was sold to Racing Club de Strasbourg in France for 5.5 million euros. Despite rumours of a possible transfer to English club Chelsea, sources at Atlético Nacional clarified that the transaction was made directly with the French side, despite both clubs belonging to the same investment group.

This arrival adds to a series of sales of players trained at the Antioquian club who, in the last three years, have emigrated abroad to continue their football careers. Among the most notable are Kevin Mier and Sebastián Gómez, who left a significant mark on the team before leaving. However, other talents could barely be enjoyed by fans due to the dynamics of the current business in world football.

Below, we present the eight most relevant sales of Nacional in the last three years:

Oscar Perea: Sold for 5.5 million euros to Racing Club de Strasbourg in France.

Brayan Palacios: The 21-year-old winger was sold to Brazilian side Atlético Mineiro for 3 million euros.

John Solis: At just 18 years old, the midfielder was transferred to Girona in Spain for 6 million euros.

Kevin Mier: He joined Cruz Azul in Mexico for 3.2 million euros.

Nelson Palacio: The 23-year-old midfielder was sold in June 2023 to Real Salt Lake of the MLS.

Sebastian Gomez: The 28-year-old midfielder joined Brazilian side Coritiba, who bought 50% of his transfer for 820,000 euros.

Juan David Cabal: The 23-year-old full-back or centre-back was sold to Hellas Verona in Italy for 4 million euros.

Yerson Mosquera: The central defender was acquired by English club Wolverhampton in June 2021 for 5.2 million euros.

In total, these transactions add up to 29.5 million euros in sales. However, it is important to consider the deductions associated with this income. Generally, transfers include 8% for the player, 10% for the agent, and 30% in capital gains tax. In addition, 5% is paid for solidarity and training. Thus, the club is left with approximately 47% of the total, but other costs such as legalisation of the money, withholdings at source, ICA and 4 per thousand must be subtracted from this percentage. In general terms, Atlético Nacional retains around 30% of the total amount of the transfers. It is important to note that the player’s percentage can vary depending on the country.

These sales reflect Nacional’s ability to develop talent and its skill in managing international transactions, consolidating itself as a club that trains and exports players in the world football arena.
