ANAHEIM, Calif. — Logan O’Hoppe hit a three-run homer in the eighth inning and the Los Angeles Angels beat the Detroit Tigers 5-2 on Friday night for their season-best fifth straight win.
Venezuelan Luis Rengifo, the American League’s batting leader, had a pair of hits, including a two-run homer in the second inning, to raise his average to .315.
Detroit pitcher Kenta Maeda left after a line drive hit him in the hip during the sixth inning.
Taylor Ward’s ball hit Maeda and deflected toward first base. Maeda tried to run to the bag as Mark Canha caught the ball.
However, the pitcher grimaced and fell to one knee. He allowed two runs and six hits in 5 1/3 innings,
Dominican Luis Garcia (3-0) got the win and his compatriot Carlos Estevez finished the game for his 16th save.
The loss went to Shelby Miller (4-6).
For the Tigers, Dominican Wenceel Pérez was 0-for-3 with one run scored. Cuban Andy Ibáñez 4-1. Colombian Gio Urshela 3-0.
For the Angels, the Venezuelans Rengifo is 4-2 with two runs scored and two RBIs, Luis Guillorme is 3-2.
