We tested the Samsung Galaxy A55 5G and A35 5G, the economic successors of two of the best-selling mobile phones in the world

Samsung’s mid-range devices have been among the best-selling terminals in the world for years. The Korean firm has just announced the launch of the latest exponents within this more economical line and, therefore, accessible to the user. It is about the Galaxy A55 5G and Galaxy A35 5Gtwo devices that, although they share many of their characteristics, including the same appearance, hide substantial differences in the most relevant points, such as the power of the processor and the camera.

Although the A55 is clearly in a higher range, as indicated by its price of 529 euros compared to its brother’s 448 euros, both are equipped with a 6.6-inch Super AMOLED screen and a 120 Hz refresh rate This is all you can ask for from a screen, which thanks to its refresh rate offers a fluid experience, especially if you like playing video games on your mobile.

It is not the best panel on the market, but it is among the best we have tested in the mid-range. Protection with Gorilla Glass Victus provides durability and shock resistance.

The design will surely catch the attention of more than one. Although it is quite reminiscent of the old iPhone, with flat edges and rounded corners, and it is not that it is very original, it does feel different. In addition, Samsung has chosen very striking pastel colors for these devices, aimed at a young audience. Both are IP67 certified against water and dust.

Differences, under the shell

The first difference between both terminals is found in the heart of the device. In the A55 we find the Exynos 1480 chipset with AMD GPU, accompanied by 8 GB of RAM with options of 128 GB or 256 GB of storage, expandable via microSD card. If we compare the Exynos 1480 with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, a widely used 2021 processor, Antutu tells us that the veteran Qualcomm chip is 63% faster despite being 3 years old.

On the other hand, in the A35, more modest, we have an Exynos 1280 with 6 or 8 gigabytes of RAM, with a performance very similar to the well-known Qualcomm Snapdragon 750G, widely used in the mid-range.

Samsung has preferred to use its own processors in these two terminals, instead of offering Qualcomm’s own, or ‘recycling’ some old high-end ones. Both processors provide more than enough power to run any application or game, but the performance is far from, for example, a high-end processor that is more than three years old such as the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1.

Cameras

The A55 has a triple camera setup with a 50 MP main sensor with OIS, a 12 MP wide angle and a 5 MP macro. This is a classic combination in the mid-range. We are not in favor of the macro camera, which serves more as a sales argument by adding a third lens.

The A35 has a 48-megapixel camera without OIS, and an eight-megapixel wide angle. Not only does the A35 lose the OIS and some megapixels, the result of the photos is also different in terms of color balance, if we compare two photos taken from the same place, you can see how the A55 offers brighter colors than the A35.

The front cameras also vary, from 32 megapixels on the A55 to 13 megapixels on the A35. Both are better than what we can find in the mid-range, but obviously the A55 far surpasses the image quality of the A35.

Both have a 5,000 mAh battery, which provides more than 24 hours of autonomy, fast charging is 25w. Neither includes the charger in the box.

Which one is more worth it?

Both the Galaxy A55 5G and the Galaxy A35 5G are solid proposals for the mid-range, with a good design and a large screen. The difference in camera and processor between both models is substantial enough to justify the extra cost, so if you can afford it, we would opt directly for the A55.
