Playing online and sharing experiences with other gamers around the world has become a fundamental opportunity for video game fans, this will have a powerful upgrade in the coming months. Through the most recent post on the PlayStation Blog it was confirmed that you will be able to invite friends and other players to your games in a future update.

What will this system be like?

You will have the ability to create a link that you can share on your PS5 console or in the PlayStation App and send it to other PS5 players via any social media or messaging platform. Opening the link will allow the recipient to join the multiplayer session, even if they are not already your friend on PlayStation Network.

For example, if you’ve just made new friends on your favorite social platform, you can send them an invite to a PS5 session in the same chat and start playing together right away, without needing to add them as friends on PS5 first.

This feature is designed to complement existing methods for joining a session from a PS5 game and is consistent for any supported PS5 game. Because this is new technology, a small percentage of PS5 games may require an update to ensure access to join a session works smoothly. We will collaborate with our development partners to explore the best solutions for those games.

Additionally, we developed a unique widget for PS5 session invites shared on Discord. The widget updates dynamically to show the status of the multiplayer session, so you’ll know if the session is still active before you join.

Finally, in the coming months, we will also introduce the ability for you to share your PlayStation Network profile or that of another player in any message or social media application by generating a link from PlayStation Appthe PS5 console or your web profile on PlayStation.com.

These are just some of the steps we’re taking to make it easier for you to connect with players online and play together in multiplayer sessions. We are committed to continued innovation in this space and we listen to your feedback, so let us know what you think.

Remember that to join an online multiplayer session you must have the game you are being invited to installed, and most PS5 games will require an active PS Plus subscription. PS4 games and other backward compatible titles are not supported.

Stay tuned for future updates that will continue to connect you with your friends and other players across PlayStation 5, learn more on the PlayStation Blog.
