Great audience at the talk “Artificial intelligence: opportunities and challenges” – Central de Noticias

It was organized by Coopelectric and the Olavarría headquarters faculties of Unicen. Dr. Alejando Zunino and Dr. Silvia Schiaffino spoke.

In front of a large audience, Dr. Alejandro Zunino and Dr. Silvia Schiaffino, director and vice-director of the Higher Institute of Software Engineering Tandil (ISISTAN – UNCPBA & CONICET) spoke on Artificial Intelligence: Opportunities and challenges, in a talk that was organized jointly between Coopelectric and the Faculties of Engineering, Social Sciences and Health Sciences of UNICEN.

The proposal consisted of “enter the fascinating world of Artificial Intelligence (AI), exploring its fundamental concepts, its operation and its impact in various areas.”

For this, they defined it as the intelligence exhibited by an artificial entity, in this case a computer, a system and they explained that as a discipline “it tries to understand intelligent entities (humans) with the purpose of constructing intelligent entities in addition to understanding them, which is why it is related to the production of machines to automate tasks that require intelligent behavior.”

Among the approaches and applications, they mentioned recommendation systems that learn the profile of users and suggest items that are of interest to them, such as Netflix or other platforms that we use daily; also machine learning from observing data and organizing it, language processing and computer vision as the ability to understand real-world images.

Based on this, They addressed learning in AI by analyzing how these systems acquire knowledge and adapt to new situations. “It gives the machine the ability to learn from experience, without being explicitly programmed,” they noted.

Then they turned to a more controversial topic.: Generative AIs and their potential impact on humanity, analyzing the possibilities, risks and limitations of these technologies. It is a type of Artificial Intelligence that creates new content based on what it learned from existing content when given an instruction, uses a learned model to predict what the expected response would be and generate it.

In that sense, They provided information about ChatGPT, image generation, generative language models, among other topics, using concrete examples in different areas.

Finally, they detailed aspects to take into account, such as truthfulness, the manipulation that persuasive texts can generate, hallucinations understood as incorrect or misleading information and the generation of content that can reflect racial and gender prejudices.

The need to have a critical look when using this technologythe importance of training at all educational levels, the challenge of moving forward with regulations that contemplate different aspects of these advances and the possibility of generating opportunities were also triggers for the talk.

In that line, The experiences carried out at ISISTAN generated great interest among the participants and at the same time the space was enabled for consultations or expression of opinions, which further enriched the proposal.
