Intel introduced new processors optimized for artificial intelligence functions in laptops

The technological manufacturer Intel announced his new line of processorswhich includes a chip optimized for Artificial intelligence (AI) which, according to the company, will offer 50% more graphics performance than the previous version, along with up to 60% better battery life.

As part of his presentation at the event Computex 2024 –which is held from June 4 to 7 in Taipei, Taiwan, and brings together companies in the microprocessor sector–, Intel presented its new chip designs that will allow “radically accelerating the AI ecosystem”. In addition to being used for data centers and cloud operations, these types of processors are optimized for laptop computers that integrate AI out of the box, such as those announced by Microsoft weeks ago.

Featuring an all-new SoC (System-on-a-Chip) design, Lunar Lake triples the size of its predecessor, Meteor Lake, and quadruples the performance for AI. This component offers up to 14% more speed, a requirement that is becoming increasingly relevant for manufacturers of teams that aim to have different types of AI run locally on their devices.

Lunar Lake Architecture

The new Lunar Lake processor is manufactured with a disaggregated microarchitecture, which implies that the final product is made up of several blocks with different functions that Intel calls tiles. Each of these pieces are connected by high-performance links and can be scaled individually.

These processors are made up of performance cores (P cores) and efficient cores (E cores), which offer “significant” improvements in both aspects, and are added a fourth-generation NPU (Neural Processing Unit) with which the computing capacity is multiplied up to four times compared to the previous version.

Intel’s new processor was optimized with higher performance for AI.

Intel ensures that the Lunar Lake NPU delivers 48 TOPS (teraoperations per second), and if the capacity of the integrated GPU is added, the performance shoots up to 120 TOPS. Copilot+, the new AI assistant that Windows 11 will incorporate, requires a calculation capacity of at least 40 TOPS.

Xeon 6

The company also presented the new Intel Xeon 6, which incorporate efficient cores capable of offering greater performance and energy efficiency for high-density and horizontally scalable workloads in data centers.

Intel commented that it is already supplying these processors “on a large scale” and that will be present in more than 80 different AI PC designs from 20 manufacturers.
