Kali Linux, hackers’ favorite OS, releases a new version

This latest OS update has arrived a little later than normal. According to the developers, this has to do with several changes implemented in the process. Among them, this was the first time that the community has helped not only through proposals for new packages, but also by lending a hand with updating and correcting errors and bugs in the system.

Among the new features of this Kali Linux 2024.2 There is the inclusion of GNOME 46, with new extensions and themes, and improvements in the search and file management, in online accounts, remote desktop, in navigation or the settings application, among many others. On the other hand, the improvements to kali-undercover They bring much more stability to desktops that simulate the appearance of other operating systems, such as Windows, so that Kali does not attract attention when using the computer in a public place.

Really excited to announce the release of Kali Linux 2024.2! https://t.co/BEPTf5949m

A lot in this release, including the t64 transition, which is a really big deal and has been a lot of work. Special shout out to Arnaud for leading that effort.

This version of Kali has also had to solve the transition to Debian’s t64, which especially affects 32-bit ARM architectures such as armhf and armel. This transition comes as a solution to an error that, curiously, is reminiscent of the year 2000 effect, since it would change the system date to the year 1901 when January 9, 2038 is reached.

The developers explain it as follows: «To avoid the year 2038 problem, the size of the time_t type had to be changed to be 64 bits, on those architectures where it was 32 bits. For Kali Linux, that means the two 32-bit ARM architectures we support: armhf and armel. These architectures are primarily used for ARM images (e.g. Raspberry Pi) and some NetHunter images. Note that the i386 architecture (i.e. the legacy PC) did not change: this architecture will still have a 32-bit time_t type, and that will not change. Kali has always treated the ARM platform as a first-class citizen«.

On the other hand, NetHunter has been updated to be compatible with Android 14 phones and other devices, and new kernels that cover the Huawei P9 for LineageOS 16, the Nothing Phone 1 for Android 12, 13 & 14, and the Poco F3 for Android 14. Likewise, new tools and updated libraries have been included. You can check out the 18 new tools in the following image, or by visiting the Kali website.

These new programs will help cybersecurity and ethical hacking experts in their daily tasks, joining Kali’s extensive previous catalog of tools for these professionals.
