OpenAI expands its computing capacity with the support of Oracle and Microsoft

OpenAI has announced its partnership with Oracle to increase its computing power, essential for the operation of advanced services such as ChatGPT. This agreement, complemented by the continued collaboration with Microsoft, marks a step forward in OpenAI’s technological capabilities.

OpenAI, in a constant search to expand its infrastructure, has integrated Oracle into its technological support network. This week, the three technology giants—OpenAI, Microsoft and Oracle—unified efforts to enhance the use of the Microsoft Azure AI platform on Oracle infrastructure. “It will allow OpenAI to continue scaling,” said Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, highlighting the importance of Oracle chips in this expansion.

Historically, OpenAI has relied exclusively on Microsoft for its computing needs. Microsoft has demonstrated its commitment through an investment of $13 billion, acquiring 49 percent of the OpenAI subsidiary and exclusive rights to commercially license its technology. However, the new agreement with Oracle reflects a growing need for additional computing resources to avoid future disruptions and meet global demand.

In an effort to clear up any doubts about the new alliance, OpenAI assured that “our strategic cloud relationship with Microsoft has not changed.” This additional partnership “allows OpenAI to use the Azure AI platform on the OCI infrastructure for inference and other needs,” clarifying that inference refers to the operational use of AI models in applications like ChatGPT.

Additionally, OpenAI reaffirmed that training of its most advanced models continues to be performed on supercomputers in partnership with Microsoft. This collaboration shows how strategic alliances can strengthen the technological and operational capabilities of leading AI companies.

However, the association is not without tensions, given that Oracle also cooperates with xAI, the competitor led by Elon Musk, generating an interesting network of collaborations in the field of artificial intelligence.

This OpenAI capability expansion with support from Oracle and Microsoft illustrates a promising path toward strengthening large-scale AI applications.

How do you think this collaboration between OpenAI, Oracle and Microsoft will influence the future development of artificial intelligence technologies?
