Apple always finds a way to honor its past and thus recognize all the milestones that have made it the exemplary company it is today. With the launch of macOS Sequoia, which has one of my favorite features of all those presented at WWDC 24, the company has once again looked back, rescuing one of the most iconic elements of the Mac.

The latest version of macOS Sequoia has added a wallpaper called “Macintosh”. This animated background changes through graphics designed by Susan Karea pioneer of digital graphic design who is responsible for creating some of the most emblematic Mac icons, such as the Dogcow, which today we can make appear on the iPhone and which are repeated today in this wallpaper.

“Macintosh” is the wallpaper that pays tribute to Apple’s past in macOS Sequoia

The MacOS Sequoia wallpaper “Macintosh” is available in 8 colors and randomly displays the Happy Mac, the Dogcow, the Print Settings dialog, the floral-inspired Command icon, the “crazy” text from an Apple Think Different ad, and the bomb that appeared when macOS classic crashed, among others .

Originally drawn as 32 pixels by 32 pixels, now the icons have been rendered much larger and fill the entire computer screen. In addition, they present a more minimalist and modern design, without losing the essence of Kare’s original work, maintaining its essence.

Susan Kare worked at Apple from 1982 to 1986, as part of the user interface design team for the Macintosh project.where he was in charge of creating fundamental graphic elements such as icons, fonts and marketing material.

His work was characterized by its simplicity, clarity and visual appeal, laying the foundations of Apple’s visual language. And although Kare left Apple in 1986 to pursue new professional challenges, his contribution has always been kept in mind at Apple. Thus, from 1993 to 1998, 8 of his designs adorned Apple’s Icon Garden which was part of Apple’s former headquarters in Cupertino. Although later Steve Jobs himself will make the decision to eliminate it, but that is another story.

Seeing this wallpaper in action requires macOS Sequoia‌, but it’s currently only available to developers before the full version is released later this fall.

In case you’re nostalgic and want to appreciate them better before their release, our colleagues at BasicAppleGuy have shared a bunch of high-resolution screenshots of the most retro Mac wallpaper.
