ARRI Hi-5 SX Announced – Wireless Single-Axis Handheld Unit

ARRI has announced the Hi-5 SX, a more affordable single-axis version of the ARRI Hi 5 handheld unit. The Hi-5 SX has different upgrade options and third-party compatibility with any camera and lens. Let’s take a look!

ARRI has announced the new Hi-5 SX, a single-axis manual unit that joins the Hi-5, its three-axis wireless camera and lens controller. Attractively priced and weather resistant, the new unit shares the same ergonomic design as its older sister.

Hi-5 SX Key Features

The new manual unit has a robust sealed housing, resistant to dust and inclement weather. It features an easy-to-read touch screen based on a camera GUI. Interchangeable radio modules are also available to suit different frequency regulations. Existing Hi 5 licenses (Cinefade, RED camera control, Focusbug licenses) are compatible with the unit, but users can upgrade it with two new software licenses to access various features.

For example, the Hi 5 SX Plus license allows for lens mapping, custom Smart Ring creation, six additional user buttons, and rear slate mode, among other features. The Hi 5 SX All-Axis license adds simultaneous use of the knob, slider and force pad for three-axis lens control, full display information, AUX axis and full focal length and T-stop features virtual. The unit’s features are indistinguishable from the Hi-5 with both licenses installed. With no additional licenses, users can choose between the knob, slider or force pad to control a single axis of the lens, whether focus, iris or zoom.

ARRI offers custom Smart Rings, allowing users to program any focus extension or iris markings onto any blank Smart Ring. This will be automatically recognized on all Hi 5 and Hi 5 SX handheld units, and the ring file can be exported as a vector file to a USB for graphic customization and printing to different needs.

The Hi-5 SX is a more affordable option for first-time ACs looking for a first-party unit and single lens drive motor. The unit is also an interesting option for those already working with a three-axis manual unit and multiple lens motors, as it makes it easier to separate the iris pullers operated by the cinematographer or DIT.

Finally, users will be able to hot-swap ARRI brand batteries based on the NP-L interface without turning off the unit while the display shows its remaining capacity. Each battery supports a run time of more than twelve hours.

Price and availability

The new Hi 5 SX will be available to order from July 1, 2024 and will begin shipping on October 1, 2024. It replaces the ARRI SXU-1 single-axis manual unit, which will be phased out. For more information, visit the ARRI website here.
