  • The new batteries would offer an energy density of 1,000 watt-hours per liter

  • Unfortunately they are too fragile for use on other devices

It is not the first time that the Japanese TDK, current supplier of batteries for Apple, claims to have achieved a generous leap in quality in its technology. If at the beginning of the year it acknowledged having created a battery with 10% more capacity, now it jumps to an energy density 100 times bigger than current batteries.

Specifically, they talk about the use of a new material developed by themselves that offers an energy density of 1,000 watt-hours per liter. They believe that this newly developed material for solid-state batteries “can make a significant contribution to the energy transformation of the society” and assure that they will continue with their development to market it sooner rather than later. Unfortunately, not everything is joy.

TDK’s revolutionary batteries

Created from a ceramic material with solid oxide-based electrolytes and lithium alloy anodes, the new batteries TDK would allow smaller sizes and longer periods of use, which aims to revolutionize its use in technologies that until now use button batteries, such as in the case of smaller devices like watches.

Unfortunately, although this type of battery is lighter, cheaper, has higher performance, and charges faster than liquid electrolyte batteries, the ceramic material developed by TDK is too fragile for larger batteries. This makes its possible use in batteries such as those in cars, or even those in smartphones and laptops, a challenge that, at least for the moment, they do not plan to take on.

TDK’s plan with its new batteries is to start distributing it among its customers during next year and, if nothing goes wrong in his plans, he plans to jump into large-scale distribution for the rest of the public right after. We will see to what extent their batteries can change the frequency with which we charge watches and headphones.
