Photographers accuse Meta of labeling original work as “Made with AI”

Professional photographers have expressed frustration toward Meta, the parent company of Instagram and Facebook, for incorrectly labeling their photos with the legend “Made with AI,” according to information from The Verge.

This label suggests that the images have been generated or edited with artificial intelligence (AI), although photographers insist that their photos are natural or have only been minimally edited.

In accordance with TechCrunchone of those affected is Pete Souza, known for his work as a White House photographer.

The professional maintained that even basic adjustments to photos can lead to Instagram mislabeling them as made with AI.

According to Souza, recent changes to Adobe’s editing tools could be causing this confusion in Instagram’s algorithm.

“Not a bit of generative fill was used in any of these images (because I hate AI), so that’s a little worrying,” the photographer said.

Another photographer, Noah Kalina, known for his work with large companies, argued that the “Made with AI” label should only apply to content generated entirely by artificial intelligence, not to manually edited images.

Likewise, he questioned that the use of this label could weaken its meaning and mislead users about the veracity of the images.

So far, Meta has not publicly responded to the photographers’ complaints on Instagram. On its support page, the company explains that the label applies to any content that contains industry-standard AI-generated signals, including third-party tools used to edit images.

The disagreement on the part of the photographers shows that Meta’s algorithm to detect content created or altered by AI is not working correctly, which is why professionals request that the label be removed from their work, as it is original.
