The North American company has chosen Brazil for the test due to its high crime rate

If you have ever had a mobile phone stolen, Google has announced a perfect tool for you. In the past, we have known stories related to thefts of Apple products that, thanks to the participation of store employees, are rendered inoperative once they reach the hands of thieves. And, perhaps inspired by this kind of experience, Google has announced the “thief mode” that is about to see the light.

As the portal points out Executive in a recent publicationGoogle announced this function during the event Google for Brazil 2024. In it, she revealed that the pilot program will begin in July and that will take its first steps in the South American country, since it has become one of the main sources of device theft due to its devastating figures: almost a million mobile phones stolen a year. In fact, the figure is even more shocking if we take into account the time cadence: a smartphone every 30 seconds.

What will thief mode consist of?

As the original news indicates, the automatic detection of sudden movements will give rise to functions such as screen lock. Thus, the device will take advantage of aspects such as sensors or artificial intelligence to determine if a theft has occurred. After this, the mobile will show a message indicating that a possible crime has been detected and, after this, it will be blocked. However, if you are worried about not being able to reverse this possibility, you can rest assured: Google has everything thought of.

Once this notice appears, you have the possibility to lock the phone remotely by entering the phone number associated with the device on a web page. In fact, it will be automatically blocked if the SIM card is removed or the internet connection is lost for an extended period. In addition, it will have a authentication system to unlock it and if there are too many failed attempts, it will automatically lock. According to the company, the objective of this modality is ensure the protection of user data in case the device is stolen.
