This game is the studio’s most ambitious, and aspires to surprise us with its world and story, but there are other elements that also draw attention and, perhaps, because of the trailers they have not stood out much. Our colleagues at Vida Extra have conducted a very interesting and in-depth interview with Carrie Patel, director of Avowedand Gabriel Paramo, responsible for the gameplay, where they talk about many elements of the RPG. One of them is about the similarities with The Outer Worlds, but, apart from that, one of its virtues may be in its combat, especially taking into account the change in perspective regarding the franchise. What can Avowed offer us in combat with swords and magic? Paramo responds. “To explain it a little, the player has a series of actions that are recharged when using them. From the player’s perspective, we have several actions and each one has different boxes, some related to the weapons we will wield. Some weapons and artifacts They will only occupy one of those spaces, like one-handed swords, or guns that can be exchanged,” he says.

Avowed’s combat will be agile and dynamic

The Obsidian Entertainment creative delves into this aspect and points out that we will have “two handed weapons that will require the two squares”, but they want “the player to have the possibility of change weapons really fast“because, on the one hand, it will make them “stronger” and it will give the players “more flexibility.”

Avowed’s fight wouldn’t make much sense without the player skillswhich are “points that will be added to your own attributes and his companions and their own skill trees”, which “will unlock more skills that they can perform during the course of combat, expanding the variety of playing styles that we want to make available to the player.

One thing is certain about Avowed, and that is that players “as they level up, they will be able to explore the world and embark on main and secondary missionsfind equipment, etc.”, although we are forgetting an important aspect of RPG games, the companions. The characters that will accompany you on your adventure will play an important role, since “they add game mechanics and enable the player to have new ways to interact with the environment and elements.”

These characters that you will meet as the narrative progresses “are part of the story”, such as “they will get involved in the decisions you makeat every step, helping you find the origin of the plague that affects the island and stop it”, but what has also been ensured is that “among our companions there are personal differences“because “each one offers a different perspective, a different context, but also roles within the team.

Now, what is the role of your comrades when it comes to fighting enemies? There are many variables, and yes, “technically you can” stand back and watch them fightbut for practical purposes it will take time with basic attacks.” In the end the “goal is that the player does not have to spend too much time managing companions” because “they are a part of the combat, and they can handle themselves“, just like in The Outer Worlds. What Obsidian wants to say is that “that is not the main strategy we want for players, since we want them to be more involved with the battles.”

Gabril Paramo defines them at the end as “an extension of you during combat”, and gives the following example. “If my character is a Fighter, I might be interested in partner Marius specializing in long range with his bow, for example.
