Valve has announced a tool that is natively integrated into the latest Steam Deck software update that allows you to record games in the background with automatic saving on the console itself.

The company has recognised that “a clip is worth a thousand words” and has therefore developed a set of features designed to “immortalise highlights” or “document entire campaigns”.

Understanding that it should be “search, save and share moments”, it has developed four new features to record what happens on the console during game time, as stated on its website.

The first of these is the tool that allows recording in the background, a format that is saved live wherever the user chooses, without exceeding the duration and storage limits that are previously specified.

It also introduces a manual recording mode, so that the user can decide when a recording starts and ends. In addition, this solution is accompanied by a Steam Timeline, which generates event markers when relevant events occur.

Thanks to these dividers, the different recorded moments can be reviewed at any time, while the timeline changes appearance depending on the moment in which the game is.

With this latest beta for Steam Deck it is also possible to save and share these video clips, either during the game or after playing in MP4 format and through the Steam Mobile application or with a QR code; either from the PC to the smartphone or from the console to the computer.

Valve has commented that video recording works with all games, even non-Steam games, and that it takes advantage of the dedicated video encoding hardware of the AMD or Nvidia GPU to minimize CPU usage.

Likewise, he stressed that this feature only records the games, not the computer’s Desktop interface, and selects which audio channels are included, respecting the privacy of the players.
