23 guatines that were being rehabilitated and monitored several months ago by professionals from the Center for the Care and Assessment of Wildlife (CAVF) were released. this because they needed to evaluate their health status and determine the time in which they would be reintroduced into their habitat, to finally be taken to their natural home.

Many of the animals that arrive at the CAVF are the product of rescues, voluntary surrenders or seizures and some of them They are received by veterinarians in a very vulnerable state.

In this case, the guatines, which were treated by environmental authorities, are medium in size, they can measure between 40 and 60 centimeters, Their fur is short and they feed on fruits and seeds.

“It is gratifying to return any species of wildlife to its habitat, especially in an area where there is very little human intervention, such as the Páramo del Duende Regional Natural Park (Valle del Cauca). We hope that the biological function of the 23 guatins, 6 of which were born in the CAVF facilities, can be fully developed. The animals were grouped into four families and were released following that group composition,” said Santiago Mesa González, university professional at the East Pacific regional CVC.

On the other hand, the Valle del Cauca environmental authority recalls that illegal trafficking and commercialization of wildlife are prohibited and penalized by Colombian laws. The message is strong: wild species should not be illegally removed from their home.
