Dehradun/Pithoragarh: Forest fires wreaked havoc in Chamoli’s Dewal region, damaging part of a Govt Inter college. No students or staff were harmed as the blaze was spotted and controlled around 5am on Friday morning, locals said. Residents noted the fire gradually approached the school over Wednesday and Thursday. Eventually, the structure housing Class 10 students was entirely engulfed. The 150 students from these classes were transferred to the main block, where furniture and school materials were unscathed. Classes have summarized. Ravendra Singh, Chamoli’s district information officer, said, “The classrooms were in a pre-fabricated structure, which was gutted. The main building remains unharmed, and affected students have been relocated there.” The school, hosting 421 students, operates as an Atal Utkrisht school. Meanwhile, an inoperational primary school in Naini Thal, under Munsyari block in Pithoragarh, was razed by the flames. Although the school had been closed since the pandemic in 2020, the fire caused significant damage. The district witnessed 69 forest fires, with 23 occurring in reserve forests and 46 in panchayati forests. Over 105 hectares of forest were burnt, including 78 in panchayati forests.
