Nagpur: A fire broke out in a jewelery shop located in the bustling Sarafa Bazaar on Saturday afternoon, resulting in the destruction of property worth Rs6 lakh. Despite the severity of the blaze, no injuries were reported, said NMC fire officials. The NMC’s fire and emergency services department reported that the fire started around noon at VK Jwellers, a building with a ground floor and two additional storeys, in Bapurao Galli, Sarafa Bazaar. Upon receiving information, a fire tender from the nearby Lakadganj fire station reached the spot. It took firefighters around an hour to extinguish the flames which damaged two air conditioners, two laptops and some old furniture. However, officiating station officer Dilip Chavhan confirmed that the jewelery was safe. As per the preliminary investigation, short circuit caused the fire. The densely-populated Itwari, coupled with its narrow lanes, posed a challenge for the firefighters. The prompt response from the fire department was crucial in preventing a potentially catastrophic event as the ares is shock-a-block with shops.
