On April 16, a strong explosion due to gas accumulation that damaged five houses in the Tlalpan mayor’s office of Mexico City (CDMX) left a five people and seven pets injured. The dogs were cared for by the Animal Surveillance Brigade (BVA) of the Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC), in whose facilities they remain protected since their family has not searched for them.

In this context, the BVA made a called on the owners of the rescued dogs to come forward and thus facilitate the reunion with your pets. Meanwhile, each of the dogs will continue to receive the food and affection they require.

If the animals are not claimed by their owners, the rescue body will add them to the adoption program so they can find a new family.

The SSC specified that There are six dogs that are waiting for their owners, since the seventh has already been delivered to its owner.

According to the agency, the animal that was returned to its family is a long-haired salt and pepper female who was clinically diagnosed as healthy. A woman proved with documentation that she was her owner and was accompanied by BVA personnel to her house, where they verified that she is capable of giving the dog a decent life.

After receiving a request for help from residents of the Miguel Hidalgo Third Section neighborhood, the Animal Surveillance Brigade intervened to rescue seven dogs of various breeds that suffered injuries due to the collapse of a building caused by a gas explosion.

After assisting those affected by the incident, caused by the accumulation of gas in a property on Toribio Alcaraz Street, members of the SSC quickly came to attend to the dogs involved in the event.

The BVA agents, using specialized techniques, managed to rescue the dogs, which showed signs of stress and nervousnessas well as serious injuries from flames, smoke exposure and possible bone fractures.

With caution to avoid further damage, and in collaboration with other government agencies, they moved the animals to the BVA headquarters in Xochimilco. There, veterinarians evaluated and treated the dogs.

A 10-year-old male dog, large and with black and brown fur, was diagnosed with bilateral blepharitis and conjunctivitis. Likewise, another male, small and with black and white hair, about six years old, was treated.

A small female with long gray hair was cared for byr cuts on the shoulder and one front leg; A medium-sized female, gray with white spots, was treated for first-degree burns on her face.

Finally, a large male dog, about eight years old with light brown fur, was assisted by a open fracture in the left femur.

A gas accumulation explosion occurs when gas, whether natural or otherwise used for heating, cooking, or other purposes, escapes into the environment and accumulates in an enclosed space without adequate ventilation. When the concentration of this gas reaches a critical level, any ignition source—such as an electrical spark, an open flame, or even a light switch—can cause an explosion.

Causes of gas buildup may include:

  • Leaks in piping systems, loose connections, corrosion or damage to gas infrastructure.
  • Defective or poorly maintained gas appliances that do not burn the gas completely.
  • Improper use of gas-based equipment, such as heaters or stoves, especially in poorly ventilated areas.
  • Improper installation of gas equipment.
  • Lack of detection or ignorance of the presence of gas, often because natural gas is odorless in its original state, although an odorant is usually added to facilitate its detection.

To prevent incidents of this type, it is crucial to maintain adequate ventilation in areas where gas is used, perform regular inspections of gas systems and appliances, and be alert for signs of a possible gas leak.
