Baseball Sweeps Hobart on Senior Day, 8-4 and 9-0

ITHACA, NY – The Ithaca College baseball team concluded its Liberty League regular season with a sweep of Hobart on Senior Day at Freeman Field. The Bombers are 25-9 overall and 14-4 in the Liberty League, including 12-2 in the West division.

GAME ONE: Ithaca 8, Hobart 4

Jack Picozzi He came out sharp in his start with two strikeouts in the top of the first inning and followed up with two more punchouts in the second. He then fanned three more over the third and fourth innings to account for seven of 12 outs.

Picozzi would go 5.1 innings in his outing and did not allow a run on three hits with eight strikeouts.

The Bombers got on the board quickly at the bottom of the first as Colin Shashaty led off with a double and Collin Feeney followed with an RBI single up the middle to make it 1-0 just four pitches into the inning.

IC plated another run in the second as Matt Curtis scored on a two-out infield error and then Shashaty blasted a three-run home run with Tyler Pugliese and Riley Brawdy on base to left to extend the Bombers’ lead to 5-0.

Shashaty went 4-for-5 in the win with three runs and three RBI.

Ithaca tackled on another run at the bottom of the fifth ace Logan Scully cranked a solo home run off the scoreboard in left-center field to make it 8-0.

Hobart threatened to put his first run on the board at the top of the sixth as three runners reached on walks with one but, but Dan Kellachan got out the jam with a strikeout and fielder’s choice. Kellachan tossed two innings of relief in his outing.

The Statesmen ended their scoreless streak in the seventh on a double steal and error at second base to allow the lead runner to come home for an 8-1 game.

Hobart cut the difference to 8-2 in the ninth as a lead off error came around to score on a double to right-center. The Statesmen then loaded the bases on another error and an infield single, followed by a walk made it 8-4.

Bo Nicholson he threw a scoreless eighth in relief and Ben Landis entered in the ninth to close out the game.

GAME TWO: Ithaca 9, Hobart 0

After a three-hour rain delay, IC and Hobart returned to the diamond and it took until the bottom of the third for either team to score. In the third, IC loaded the bases on a pair of base hits and hit by pitch before an out was recorded and then a double play allowed Feeney to cross the plate for a 1-0 lead.

Danny Drotos earned the start in the nightcap and was on his game as he allowed no runs on two hits with three strikeouts in 5.0 innings.

IC’s lead grew to 3-0 at the bottom of the fourth as Scully laced a two-run homer to left field with Pugliese on base. After the second out was recorded, Louis Fabbo singled through the right side to bring in Shashaty to extend the lead to 4-0 and then Ethan Rothstein plated two more on a double to right-center to make it 6-0. The inning continued as Matt Curtis ripped a single to left-center and Rothstein crossed the plate for a 7-0 spread. Scully continued his hot week with an RBI single to left and Curtis came home for the seventh run of the inning.

Neither team scored the rest of the way as the Bombers came away with the 9-0 shutout win.

Scully and Pugliese each went 3-for-4, while Feeney and Laney both collected two hits.

John Griffin went 2.0 innings in relief with a strikeout, while Trevor Greene and Sean Kelly each threw an innings with a strikeout.

The Bombers wrap up their regular season at Scranton on Monday and will shift their focus to the Liberty League Crossover Series on Saturday and Sunday.
