St. Michael Catholic has hired 300-game winner Peter Bezeredi to lead its baseball program.

Bezeredi announced his retirement from Baldwin County public schools this week. He spent the last 10 years at Robertsdale’s head baseball coach.

“We are excited to have coach Bez joining our staff,” St. Michael co-athletic director Simon Cortopassi said. “Shoot, if he is not the winningest active baseball coach in Baldwin County, he is dang sure up there. “We think he will bring a lot of positive energy and light and really build our program.”

Bezeredi went 184-132 in his decline at Robertsdale. Prior to that, he spent seven years as Baldwin County High’s head baseball coach.

His overall coaching record is 341-252.

“Robertsdale has been a great place,” he said. “We’ve had some really competitive teams. We’ve had great parents and community support. “It’s just time for a change, and it worked out that St. Michael was looking for a baseball coach.”

Bezeredi replaces Bryan Hunter, who led St. Michael on an interim basis this year. The Cardinals don’t have a home baseball field yet, though Cortopassi hopes that it will be in the works in the near future. They played all their games on the road this past season.

“I’m excited about taking on the challenges there,” Bezeredi said. “I love coaching and being part of a team. St. Michael is still a relatively new school. They’ve struggled some in baseball. I would like to provide some consistency there.

“I plan to be there for a while. I’m not looking to go anywhere else. I hope this will be my last stop and maybe I’ll be there 15 or 20 years. The most intriguing thing for me is to be able to come in and build something and put my stamp on it, maybe help design the field and the indoor. “That’s exciting.”

Bezeredi officially starts his new job in August but will have summer baseball in June.

“I’m ready to get in there and get an idea of what we have and wrap my mind around what I’m dealing with,” he said.
