A baby just four months old has had to be admitted with symptoms of ethyl coma for a mistake made by his grandmother. The events occurred on April 29 and he is currently still intubated in the intensive care unit of the Giovanni XXIII pediatric hospital in Bari, a city on the shores of the Adriatic Sea in Italyas reported by the newspaper The Republic.

The main hypothesis that the Police follow is that the event occurred simply because a lack of attention, although for the moment they are going to continue with the investigation. According to this version, white wine was used instead of water to dilute the milk powder, which the grandmother confused because it was inside a dark bottle. The little boy ingested part of the content, but after a while he refused to continue drinking.

At that moment, the grandmother realized the mistake and notified the mother. They took the boy immediately to the Perrino emergency room, where he was transferred to Pediatrics and immediately received by doctors for a urgent treatment. This included gastric lavage and then intubation, before being transferred to the Giovanni XXIII pediatric hospital in Bari, where he is currently in the intensive care unit.

The baby’s condition is stable at the moment and seems to be improving slightly, but due to his young age there is a great danger to his life. The prognosis is reserved and it is being considered whether he can be extubated. The Carabinieri of the Brindisi company are the ones who are investigating what happened, but for now there is no open case.

This poisoning is much more dangerous in minors, since having less weight and size, the blood alcohol level will be proportionally higher than in adults and having a developing brain is much more vulnerable. Dr. Fidel Fuentes, director of Emergencies at the Igualatorio Médico Quirúrgico (IMQ) Clinics, explained in an interview with Trade in 2016 that the problems for the health of the minor increase as they are not limited to the moment of ingestion, but are transferred to their daily life.

“Can produce behavioral and memory disorderswhich can lead to learning disorders, with poor academic performance,” explained this expert, adding that “it also influences the deterioration of relationships with family, classmates and teachers, and in a significant way there are violent behaviors and high-risk behaviorsas well as behavioral alterations, aggression, violence, suicide and greater vulnerability to dependence on other drugs.”
