A fire that started in the attic of a house south of the Glenmore Reservoir was controlled Thursday night, with the homeowner exiting unscathed.
The homeowner called 9-11 just before 5 pm Thursday evening with reports of smoke and fire in his home, said Alistair Robin, battalion chief for the Calgary Fire Department. The resident had been doing renovations on the property when he heard cracking in the attic space, Robin said. Despite efforts to quell the blaze with a fire extinguisher, he eventually exited the building and called 9-11.

Firefighters arrived at the 2000 block of Paliswood Road SW to smoke and flames going through the roof of the duplex, Robin said. Firefighters confirmed there were no other residents or pets remaining in the building.
The majority of the roof of the duplex is gone, Robin said, adding it’s unclear whether the rest of the structure will be saved.
“Once a fire gets into the attic space… it can be quite complicated, so we’re doing what we can to salvage and overhaul,” he said.
Firefighters were still working to tame the fire as of Thursday at around 6:15 pm
A Calgary fire investigator will be on the scene to determine the cause of the fire, Robin said. He added that the structures beside the home were not damaged, but the secondary part of the duplex likely suffered smoke damage.
Overall, 14 apparatuses attended the fire including several engines, rescue teams and ladders, Robin said.
