NEWTON TOWNSHIP — With the Muskingum Valley League meeting less than a week away, numerous area athletes prepared themselves with the competition on Friday in the Jerry Neal Invitational at Maysville.
John Glenn scored 167 points for the team title with Jessica Church in first in the 100 (12.95 seconds) and 400 (1:00.4); Kira Kaiser in first in the 800 (2:29.36) with Laurie Baughman second (2:33.02); Ashlynn Kuklica first in the 1,600 (5:30.3) with Brea Wilfong third (5:41); Teegan Walrath first in the 100 hurdles (17.35) with Courtney Barnhart third (18.19); Riley Zamensky first in the high jump (5-0); Barnhart second (52.73) and Mya Warner third (55.47) in the 300 hurdles; Brayden Snider first in the pole vault (11-8) and second in the long jump (16-0 3/4); Brooklyn Valentine second in the pole vault (10-0); the 4×100 (54.55) and 4×200 (1:53.62) second; the 4×800 third (11:49); and Chelsea Sotherden third in the discus (113-9).
The Tri-Valley girls came in second with 96, as the 4×100 won (53.8), Taylor Crozier placed first in the 3,200 (12:36) and third in the 400 (1:04.05), Erin Hogue was second in the 1,600 ( 5:36), the 4×800 was second (11:26), the 4×400 was third (4:29.8), Mackenzie Harvey placed second in the discus (114-3) and shot (33-9), and Gabriella Matz finished third in the high jump (4-10).
Halli Harris won the girls 200 (27.15) and long jump (16-3) and was second in the 100 (13.12), the 4×200 placed first (1:51.92), Makenna Staker took second in the 100 hurdles (17.46), Jenna Lytton was third in the 3,200 (15:29), Emily Stockdale added a third in the long jump (15-3 3/4) and Delylah Boetcher was third in the pole vault (9-6) for Philo, who was fourth ( 75).
Morgan was fifth (54), West M sixth (47), Maysville seventh (44) and Crooksville eighth (43).
Bella Van Wey won the discus (125-9) and shot (37-8) and Aaliyah Whitehair placed third in the 100 (13.29) for Maysville; Aleah Bogue took second (28.15) and Ava Davis third (28.30) in the 200, Davis placed second in the 400 (1:03.9), the 4×400 came in second (4:29.09) and 4×200 was third (1:53.73), and Josie Patterson was second in the high jump (4-10) for Morgan; Hannah Sheets placed second in the 3,200 (12:38), Grace Sheets third in the 800 (2:39.32) and Paige Frame third in the shot (30-1) for Crooksville; and Molly Spiker won the 300 hurdles (49.29) for West M.
John Glenn boys were second (105) with Licking Valley winning with 145.5. Tri-Valley placed third (99.5), Philo fourth (86.5), Morgan fifth (79), Rosecrans sixth (43.5), Maysville seventh (34.5), Crooksville eighth (32.5) and West M ninth (31).
Philo’s Aidan Mahon led area boys by winning three events: 200 (22.84), high jump (6-5) and long jump (21-3 1/4). Ryan Morris also won the 3,200 (10:59), Deacon Scott placed second in the 110 hurdles (15.96), Alex Evans finished third in the 300 hurdles (43.2), and the 4×200 relay was third (1:33.78) for Philo.
Ethan Zell won the 1,600 (4:45.19) with Caiden Lake in second (4:46.25), Cash Smith captured the 110 hurdles (15.82) with Cameron Barnhouse in third (16.6), the 4×400 was second (3:39.25), Alex Smith took second in the pole vault (12-6) and Jimmy Boyd placed third in the shot (44-7) for John Glenn.
Tri-Valley’s Chris Gargasz won the discus (159-6) with Micah Shupert in third (139-11), Gargasz placed second in the shot (48-8), the 4×800 finished second (9:30), Lucca Gargasz took second in the high jump (6-0), Ethan Dusenberry was third in the 800 (2:11.99), George Smith came in third in the 3,200 (11:14), and Grayden Matthews was third in the pole vault (11-0 ).
Morgan’s 4×100 won in 44.45 seconds, Kyle Campbell (11.53) and Adam Cooper (11.57) went 2-3 in the 100, Braylon Miller took second in the 400 (52.77), Cooper added a second in the 300 hurdles (41.78), Clark Smith was third in the 1,600 (4:48) and the 4×800 was also third (10:01).
Brody Zemba won the 100 (11.45) and placed second in the 200 (23.06) for Rosecrans; West M’s 4×200 relay posted a winning time of 1:32.55, the 4×100 (44.69) came in second, the 4×400 was third (3:42.12), and Jax Prang took third in the 200 (23.52); Grayson Houk placed first in the 400 (51.98) and Brayson Hill came in third in the long jump (20-1 1/4) for Crooksville; and Owen Rusnak came in third in the 400 (53.71), and the 4×100 placed third (45.23) for Maysville.
Softball
John Glenn 4, Morgan 2: The Muskies (16-6, 14-1) plated three runs behind an error, a wild pitch and a groundout in the fourth inning and winning pitcher Sydney Marshall made it stand for the victory.
Marshall scattered seven hits, struck out 11 and walked three, and Alivia Boothe had the team’s only hit and scored twice as John Glenn secured at least a share of the Muskingum Valley League Big School Division title. A win over Tri-Valley at home on Monday secures an outright title.
Malayni Clemens tossed the one-hitter with eight strikeouts in the loss. All four John Glenn runs were unearned.
Paige Lanning, who also had a double, hit an RBI single and Ellie Parsons ripped an RBI double in the two-run sixth for the Raiders (12-4, 9-4), while Chloe Baker hit a pair of singles and scored.
West Muskingum 9, River View 1: The Tornadoes (15-6, 11-3) used a six-run sixth to pull away from the Lady Bears (3-16, 3-13) in an MVL makeup.
Lydiah Huey hit an RBI double and Mireyha Reese doubled home two runs in the sixth for West M. Reese, Gabbi Hammer, and Kate Foster each finished with two hits and Huey drove in two runs.
Cadence Puckett surrendered one run on three hits with three strikeouts and three walks in 4 1/3 innings to earn the win. Kadie Bare tossed 2 2/3 scoreless innings of relief.
Addyson Blair and Kylie Dobson doubled and Regan Foster went the distance in the loss, allowing nine runs on 11 hits with three strikeouts and one walk.
Maysville 11, Trimble 1 (5 inn.): Kaelynne Mitton drilled two doubles and drove in three runs to pace the Panthers (3-16) in a mercy win over the Tomcats.
Olivia McPeek added a double, a single, two RBIs and two runs scored, Ashtyn Merlo hit a double with two RBIs, Josalynn Milatovich had two hits and an RBI and Kam Brooks chipped in two hits and two runs scored for Maysville.
Winning pitcher Chloe Burley tossed a two-hitter with a pair of strikeouts.
Liberty Union 12, Coshocton 0 (5 inn.): Kylee Raber doubled and Jazlene Brown and Addison Rice singled as the Redskins (5-19) were held to three hits in the loss.
Mallorie Stamper gave up 11 runs in 1 2/3 innings to take the loss.
Rosecrans 19, Fairfield Christian 16: Kate Ward, who had three hits and three RBIs, drilled an RBI double, leading to a walk-off win for the Bishops.
Emily Jenkins went 5-for-5 with a double and three RBIs, Ellie Worden added four hits with a double, two RBIs and three runs scored, Abby Sagan doubled twice and singled with three runs scored, Serenaty Gibson added four hits with a double , three RBIs and three runs scored, Sam Delik doubled among her three hits and drove in two runs, Mallory Moody had two singles and two RBIs and Kerry Thompson hit a double and a single and scored twice for Rosecrans.
Dakota Householder had 12 strikeouts and nine walks in the complete game win.
Granville 18, Zanesville 0 (5 inn.): Jayden Spencer, Kierra Joseph and Jaliyah Edwards had the Lady Devils’ hits in a Licking County League loss.
Ayawna Gladden gave up 16 runs on 12 hits in three innings to take the loss.
Baseball
Tri-Valley 8, Meadowbrook 0: Brady Kaufman moved to 6-0, tossing a one-hitter with 15 strikeouts as the Scotties (18-2, 15-0) picked up an MVL win against the Colts (6-13, 6-8) in a makeup game.
Kaufman added two hits, including a three-run home run, Ashton Sensibaugh had three hits, and Gavin Harrold collected two hits with three RBIs.
Kade Winnett had Meadowbrook’s only hit, and Cohen Miles suffered the loss after allowing eight runs on five hits with two strikeouts and two walks in five innings.
Granville 11, Zanesville 5: The Blue Aces scored eight runs over the final three innings to down the Blue Devils (5-15-1) in LCL play.
Solomon Norris had a double among his three hits and scored three runs, Canon Mercer and Caleb Underwood added two hits and an RBI apiece and Underwood allowed three runs on four hits with four strikeouts in two innings to suffer the loss for Zanesville.
Morgan 18, John Glenn 8 (6 inn.): Witten Schaad had three singles and three RBIs, Kole Searl collected three hits and five runs scored, and Landan Gheen chipped in three singles and three runs scored, leading the Raiders (10-7, 7-6) to an MVL victory.
Schaad also picked up the win, allowing three runs on three hits in 3 1/3 innings, Logan Niceswanger and Owen McCoy each had a hit and two RBIs, and Rance Eddleblute singled out twice with an RBI.
Noah Winland had a pair of singles, Carter Merry singled and knocked out in three runs and Riley Lake doubled with an RBI to lead the Muskies (5-15, 5-10). Trent Milliner allowed 13 runs, five earned, on 10 hits in three innings for the loss.
Maysville 4, Rosecrans 3: The Panthers (6-11) escaped a bases-loaded jam to hold off the Bishops (14-7) in non-league play.
Coen Fink and Todd Saxton doubled and singled, Wesley Armstead had two hits with an RBI, Saxton and Tyler Debolt drove in runs and Fink scored twice for the Maysville offense. Colton Gifford had nine strikeouts and gave up five hits in 6 1/3 innings to earn the win.
Preston Farrell gave up four runs on 10 hits in a complete game loss. He also had four walks and two strikeouts, while the offense was led by Nick Bernath with two hits and an RBI and Brendan Bernath with two singles and a run scored.
Philo 3, Ridgewood 2: The Generals (6-14) left the bases loaded at the bottom of the seventh to lose to the visiting Electrics (7-14-1).
Cooper Radcliffe hit a two-run single at the top of the seventh to put Philo up 3-1, while Jace McQueen’s two-out single brought in a run for Ridgewood at the bottom of the seventh.
Josh Gooden fanned eight, walked five and scattered three hits in the complete game win. He also tripled, as only four Electrics had a hit.
Maison Kiser took the complete-game loss, striking out five and walking four. He also had two of Ridgewood’s three hits and drove in a run.
Garaway 7, Coshocton 0: Cooper George had two of the Redskins’ five hits in a loss to the Pirates at Lake Park.
Bentley Cunningham, JJ Herman and Jace Dickerson also had hits, while Calan Shaw surrendered six runs on four hits with six strikeouts and three walks in 6 1/3 innings in taking the loss for Coshocton (3-19).
