CHANDIGARH: Over 7 years after the gang rape of two girls including a minor and double murder of a couple in Dingerheri village of Haryana’s Nuh, the Special CBI court at Panchkula on Saturday awarded death penalty to the four convicts, ending it a “rarest of rare case”.

While handing down the 17-page quantum order, Special CBI judge Rajeev Goyal ordered that the convicts, Vinay alias Lambu, Jai Bhagwan, Hemant Chauhan and Aayan Chauhan, be “hanged from the neck until death”. The judge also slapped a with combined fine of Rs. 8.20 lakh on them.

While justifying awarding of the capital punishment to the convicts, the special CBI judge observed: “The convicts being habitual of committing very serious and grave offenses are a serious threat to the society. Their chances of reformation and rehabilitation are very bleak…” He then broke his pen.

On April 10, the CBI court had held the four convicts guilty of gang rape and double murder while acquitting six others of the charges.

The brutal crime dates back to the night of August 25, 2016, when a mob aligned with Kulhari Gang of Nuh led by Chauhans and Lambu entered a house in Dingerheri village of Nuh. They gang-raped two sisters including a minor and beat up their uncle, aunt and other family members, resulting in the death of the injured couple. Initially, a case was registered by Haryana police, and cow vigilante angle was also examined, but following public outcry, the probe was handed over to the CBI.

The CBI had named 12 people as accused in its charge sheet and one of the accused had committed suicide when he was summoned by the court.

Nuh gang rapes & double murder: 6 acquired last month
One of the remaining 11 accused, Amarjeet, was declared an offender as he jumped parole during trial.

Of the remaining 10 facing trial in the case, 6 accused — Tejpal, Amit, Ravinder, Karamjit, Sandeep and Rahul Verma — were acquired last month.

The four convicts were held guilty of charges under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses Act) Act.

Earlier during the day, all four were brought to court amid heavy security. After announcement of quantum of sentence in the open court, the Special CBI judge handed over the copy of orders and sent them to Ambala jail.
