Virudhunagar: Five workers, working in a unit supplying raw materials to fireworks units, suffered critical injuries in a fire accident on Monday. The unit, situated at Sengamalapatti near Sivakasi in Virudhunagar district is owned by R Chinnakaruppu. The workers were making aluminum powder from aluminum sheets, a raw material for fireworks manufacturing. The injured were identified as Chinnakaruppu, Mahendran, 26, Anburaj, 27, Sathishkumar, 27 and Veeralakshmi, 28. They were rushed to Sivakasi Government Hospital where their condition remains critical. Sources said that the workers were grinding the chemicals, when a fire broke out out with a loud noise quickly engulfing the shed. Fire tenders rushed from Sivakasi and struggled to douse the fire. Preliminary investigation revealed that the shed was damaged during recent rains and repair work was underway. A spark from the welding machine could have triggered the fire, police sources said. Sivakasi DSP Subbaiah and district fire officer Vivekanandan visited the accident spot and carried out an investigation. Police registered a case and are investigating. Meanwhile, there was a blast at a fireworks manufacturing unit at Enjar near Sivakasi. Fortunately, no workers were injured.
