The story of Kaitlin Mariana Osorio Vargas, the Samarian girl who is passionate about everything related to Astronomy, will represent Santa Marta before NASA, with her project “The Umbrella Robot”, becoming an inspiration for children and young people.
Living in rural areas of Colombia is not easy, much less when it comes to accessing education and the technological resources necessary to follow your dreams. However, Kaitlin Mariana, an eighth grade student at the Bonda District Educational Institution, is a clear example that perseverance and passion can overcome any obstacle that arises.
The student participated in the “She is a Virtual Astronaut” program, which seeks to motivate and inspire girls to become interested in the field of space science. And she presented the project “The Umbrella Robot”, which she explains below in her own words:
“»The Umbrella Robot» aims to supply communities that lack drinking water and electricity. This robot is located on the roof of the houses, which absorbs rainwater and passes it through filtration, and has solar panels that carry out the operation of the robot, and not only this, it also stores the energy to those days that there are not. And through this project I managed to be the second best in the “She is a Virtual Astronaut” program, winning a scholarship to study with academic immersion and visit NASA, at this moment I am already starting this great adventure,” said Kaitlin Mariana excitedly.
Through the program she receives training in various fields, from classes with the NASA center to electronics, programming and robotics, which broadened her horizon and strengthened her aspirations to become an astronaut.
After a selection process, Kaitlin Mariana Osorio Vargas was selected to visit the NASA facilities in Houston, Texas (United States), in July of this year, thanks to her drive and dedication as one of the 20 teenagers nationwide who They participated in the aforementioned program, which has the support of the companies Cenit and Ecopetrol.
