Last Saturday an unusual atmospheric phenomenon was recorded, a rain of fish surprised the inhabitants of the city of Yasuj, in Iran, as hundreds of fish began to fall from the sky, hitting cars and hindering traffic on a highway in said city. location.
Videos shared on social networks show locals surprised by this event, where they pick up one of the specimens to make sure that what is happening is real.
What is this phenomenon due to?
And although this may seem like part of a science fiction movie, this type of “rain” has occurred on other occasions and has a logical explanation, since it is due to a very strong meteorological phenomenon.
This is a strange event known as “animal rain” and occurs when waterspouts suck fish or other animals from rivers or lakes, drag them into the clouds and fall as precipitation.
This can also occur within storms, tornadoes or waterspouts, in which the speed of the winds is so high that it lifts the animals out of the water and traps them in said systems, transporting them great distances and later depositing them when the weather phenomenon it gets weak.
This could also occur because fish are found in underground systems such as rivers or caves that are flooded by rain, keeping them on the surface of the water and moving them through flooded areas.
Iran is not the only one
Honduras is a privileged place to see this type of rain, since in the city of Yoro It is common that during the storms of May and June, it drags and rains fish every few years.
Depending on the intensity of the waterspouts is the size of the animals it transports, at higher wind speeds, it has the capacity to lift larger fish.
