Exploring the Universe from Pasadena: A conversation with a NASA scientist

Marco Antonio Villa, NASA scientist, works from the Pasadena Base, California. He spoke for LV16 and gave details about some research such as the study of climate, space exploration and the search for life on other planets.

He shared his experience of working at the US agency for more than two decades and highlighted the importance of passion and dedication in the field of space exploration. According to him, many NASA employees stay at the institution for long periods because of their commitment to science and the opportunity to contribute to significant projects.

According to him, one of NASA’s most notable projects is the study of climate and its effects on Earth. The scientist explained how NASA satellites are being used to monitor various aspects of the climate, including sea level rise, melting ice and the concentration of carbon in the atmosphere.

In addition, he pointed out the importance of the Deep Space Network, a communication system that allows NASA to maintain contact with its satellites beyond Earth’s orbit.

Regarding the possibility of life on other planets, Villa mentioned that, although there is no solid scientific evidence, many believe that it is possible due to the large number of planets that are being discovered around other stars. He also mentioned ongoing projects, such as the study of Europa, a moon of Jupiter that could harbor life under its ice shell.

In addition to NASA projects, the scientist discussed the growing interest of private companies in space exploration, including manned flights and the possibility of using private spacecraft for exploration missions. He highlighted the importance of collaboration between the public and private sectors in the search for new discoveries in space.

Lastly, Marco Antonio Villa reflected on the future of space exploration and the excitement of discovering something completely new, sharing a personal anecdote about the words of encouragement from his great-grandmother who inspired him to continue searching for the unknown. Optimistically, he expressed his hope of witnessing the discovery of life on other planets at some point in his lifetime.
