On Wednesday, Google announced the launch of Google Wallet in India. Google has partnered with 20 Indian brands including PVR and INOX, Air India, Indigo, Flipkart, Pine Labs, Kochi Metro, Abhibus and many others for the launch. The company says that other partners will be added in the future.

Ram Papatla, GM and India Engineering Lead, Android at Google, said during the launch, “The arrival of Google Wallet in India marks an important milestone in Android’s India journey, bringing innovative and convenient experiences to simplify people’s daily lives. As mentioned already, Google Wallet does not have a payments option and is therefore different from Google Pay – which is used by millions of users across the country to make and receive payments.

What is Google Wallet and how can you download it

Google Wallet will help you store a number of documents so that you can access them any time you want. Think of it as your wallet but in digital form. From movie and event tickets to boarding passes and public transport transit tickets, Google Wallet can take care of a number of things so that you don’t have to carry all the paperwork.

“As services become increasingly digitized, most of us now rely on our phones for quick access to our everyday essentials. While the Google Pay app remains your destination for all things payments, Google Wallet now brings a new level of convenience to the Android experience in India,” a blog post by Google India reads.

With Google Wallet, Android users can effortlessly save and access movie and event tickets, boarding passes, loyalty and gift cards, public transport tickets, and even corporate badges. There are 20 partner brands supporting this until now, but more are expected to be added in the future.

Additionally, when you upload your airlines boarding pass, you will get real-time information about any flight timing changes or boarding gate changes. For Pixel phone users, adding a boarding pass is even easier as all they need to do is take a screenshot and tap “Add to Google Wallet.”

Air India is the first Indian airline that has made its passes available directly on Google Wallet.

Speaking about the same, Dr Satya Ramaswamy, Chief Digital and Technology Officer, Air India, said, “In our mission to delight our customers through innovative digital experiences, we are always looking for opportunities to partner with global companies like Google to bring guests- friendly capabilities to life. In this quest, we are glad to be the first airline from India to make our boarding passes available directly on the Google Wallet. This helps us provide an environmentally friendly solution to our valued guests that also provides digital features such as. auto-update of boarding pass details in a convenient central location on their Android phones.”

In addition to this, after booking a movie ticket, IPL ticket, or train ticket, the event confirmation that is sent to a person’s Gmail account will automatically appear in their Google Wallet as well, if they have smart personalization settings in Gmail turned on.

The app is available through PlayStore for all Android users and all you have to do is tap on Install after searching it on Google PlayStore. However, the rollout might take a while, so if you still can’t see the installation option, try returning after a while.
