Two Democratic senators opened an investigation this Friday into some alleged promises that former President Donald Trump made to the heads of the main oil companies in the United States at a meeting at Mar-a-Lago in exchange for financing for his electoral campaign.

Upper House Congressmen Sheldon Whitehouse, leader of the Budget Committee, and Ron Wyden, chairman of the Finance Committee, today sent several letters to the directors of nine oil companies, including Chevron and Exxon Mobile, requesting more information about a meeting they held with Trump in April.

At the meeting, according to the media, the Republican promised oil company representatives that if they donated a billion dollars to his campaign, he would enact laws beneficial to their industry when he reached the White House.

Specifically, Trump promised oil workers that he would lift “dozens” of environmental regulations enacted by President Joe Biden’s government, accelerate the approval of exploitation licenses and permits, and improve tax benefits for the industry.

“Time and time again, both Trump and the US oil and gas industries have demonstrated that they are willing to sell out to Americans to line their own pockets,” the senators wrote in a statement announcing the investigation.

The senators asked in the letters that the companies provide them with documents with “proposed measures” that were discussed in the meeting with Trump, which took place at the politician’s residence in Mar-a-Lago.

In turn, they request copies of any draft “executive orders or proposed regulations” that have been “created for the purpose of being used by a possible Trump Administration.”

This latest request is related to a complaint, published on the Politico portal, where it is stated that the heads of the big oil companies are already drafting proposals for executive orders beneficial to their industry, with the aim of Trump signing them once he arrives in office. White House.

The companies, the portal reported, are looking for the Republican to boost natural gas exports, reduce drilling costs and increase permits to extract oil on the high seas, according to Politico.

The announcement of the investigation comes two days after Trump held another meeting with oil industry leaders, this time in Houston, one of the most important cities for this sector.

At the meeting, the president promised that he would approve new oil exploitation projects “immediately” if he were elected in November, according to The Washington Post.
