Claudia Sheinbaum leads Xóchitl Gálvez in the Mexican presidential election this Sunday, according to exit polls and pending official results.
Polls in Mexican media indicate that the 61-year-old scientist and politician obtained more than 50% of the votes.
His rival, Gálvez, from a coalition of opposition parties, said his polls showed the votes favored him. However, he asked to wait for the official results.
The National Electoral Institute (INE) will publish the quick count this Sunday night with a sampling of voting stations that will offer a result.

More than 98.4 million citizens were eligible to elect more than 20,000 popularly elected positions, numbers that make this Sunday’s election the largest in the history of the country.
In addition to the presidency, the 500 seats in the Chamber of Deputies and the 128 seats in the Senate were in dispute. Eight governorships and the head of the Mexico City government were also renewed.
The elections were marked by violence. According to a federal government count, 22 candidates for local office were murdered. However, independent organizations counted up to 37 victims.
