Manuel José Joaquín del Corazón de Jesús Belgrano He was born in Buenos Aires on a day like today, but in 1770. Throughout his life, he worked as a politician, lawyer, soldier, journalist, economist and diplomat. He is one of the main figures who promoted the May revolution and they fought for independence of Argentina.

Furthermore, he was in charge of create the flag that today represents our country. With the position of chief of the Northern Army, on February 27, 1812, he raised this emblem of Argentine history for the first time. His colors were inspired by those of the cockadewhich was also devised by himself a couple of weeks before this event.

Manuel Belgrano died on June 20, 1820 from dropsy., at 50 years old. Despite his achievements, he died in poverty: he had to pay the doctor who treated him with a watch, the last valuable object he had left. Because of his importance to the national historyin 1938 it was determined that this date be celebrated on Argentine Flag Day to remember it.
