TULSA, OK – The Tulsa Day Center Construction has begun on a new animal shelter designed to house up to ten animals, providing a safe haven for the pets of homeless people. In this way, pet owners will be able to access the center’s day and night shelter services without having to be separated from their companions.

Currently, homeless people with animals must carry them in carriers or stay outside with them. The upcoming shelter will offer space for five large and five small animals, predominantly dogs.

Designed by Blue Star Integrative and built by AC Owen Construction, the shelter is scheduled to open in fall 2024. This project is part of the City of Tulsa’s Path to Home initiative, which consolidates diverse efforts from multiple organizations to make facing homelessness.

“The Tulsa Day Center Animal Shelter “It is a perfect example of how Tulsans bring innovative ideas to solve our city’s most pressing challenges,” said Tulsa Mayor GT Bynum. “I am glad that this project will soon be underway, which will have a significant impact for the homeless.”

Although construction has been funded through grants and donations, the shelter’s continued operation will depend on operating funds from the Tulsa Day Center. Cash donations can be made at [tulsadaycenter.org/donate](https://tulsadaycenter.org/donate), and pet supplies, such as dog food and medications, are accepted at the Tulsa Day Center headquarters, 415 W Archer St.

The new animal shelter is made possible by ARPA funding from the city of Tulsa. The city’s funding for the project is facilitated by the broader efforts of the city’s 3H task force and the Path to Home initiative. Path to Home is a tripartite initiative that serves as a central source for all programs related to housing, homelessness and mental health, and represents the cumulative work taking place in the city of Tulsa.
