All types of works and characters that serve as inspiration and, in the case at hand, make a person perform an incredible and heroic action inspired by their favorite manga and character. “Himmel would do the same”, those were the words of Xu Ruixian (許瑞顯) with which he referred to one of the characters from ‘Sōsō no Frieren’, one of the most successful series of recent times and which was key to his acting in the subway in the town of taichung in Taiwan to confront an attacker armed with a knife who threatened the rest of the passengers.
Xu Ruixian’s actions have not gone unnoticed and the Taichung City Council has recognized his heroic action with a public event. Xu has stated that he does not consider himself a hero and that he acted on instinct, motivated by the fact that there were as few victims as possible and referring to Himmel, the character from ‘Sōsō no Frieren’ who managed to make this story go viral.

Japan and the rest of the world have reacted to Xu Ruixian’s story on social media, with even the manga’s official account publishing an image in which its protagonist says the same phrase as Xu. A fan of manga and anime, an otaku who sets an example and breaks many stereotypes that some people continue to have today. Great stories can help bring out the best in some people, and in Xu’s case put his own life in danger for the sake of those around him.
