Two workers were hospitalized after inhaling gas while trying to correct a leak at the EPEP-Centro oil company in Varadero.

The victims were two young men who were fixing a gas leak that was underground and when opening and clearing the area they inhaled toxic gases, residents of Santa Marta, in Varadero, reported in the Cardenenses group on Facebook.

“There are two patients who were stabilized at the Santa Marta polyclinic and from there they were referred to Cárdenas. Then they were referred to Matanzas,” commented a worker at the hospital.

According to other comments, the young people were reported to be in serious condition but at least one of them showed some improvement.

So far there is no official information about the incident.

In the last few hours, a fire was also reported in Matanzas very close to the Supertanker Base.

Last March the regime reported that the number of work accidents in Cuba It decreased in 2023 but the death toll remained at the same levels as 2022.

In a report titled “Work Protection. Selected Indicators”, the state National Office of Statistics and Information (ONEI) indicated that a total of 1,491 work accidents occurred on the island from January to the end of December 2023.

The mortality coefficient, which represents deaths per 1,000 injured, increased from 30.3 to 33.8 points; especially due to the incidence of events in Agriculture, Construction and Supply of Electricity, Gas and Water.
