Urban development: what are the challenges that Peru has in architecture? | Architect’s Day | PERU

He urban growth of the country It is expansive and informal, characterized by the proliferation of neighborhoods and informal settlements. In this panorama, architects require better technologies for the design of more harmonious spaces combined with sustainable development.

In this way, the city will be transformed and safer, interconnected neighborhoods will be created, with quality public transport and bicycle lanes.

Urban development is essential to promote a sustainable economic growth and an optimal quality of life in cities; However, Peru is growing without a urban plan.

The root of this problem lies in the disorderly occupation of the territory caused by the demographic boom in the second part of the 20th century, during which the lack of a comprehensive vision led to misuse of natural resources and unbalanced economic development, according to he National Center for Strategic Planning (CEPLAN).

José Ignacio Pacheco, dean of the Faculty of Architecture and Design of the University of Sciences and Arts of Latin America (UCAL), points out that innovation and the use of technological tools in architecture are fundamental for the urban development of Peru.

This June 8, Architect’s Day is celebrated, so it is important to reflect on the challenges that Peru faces in terms of innovation and urban Development. In this framework, two problems stand out: the delay in infrastructure megaprojects and the necessary updating of professional profiles.

  • Delay in infrastructure projects: When large infrastructure projects are not completed on time or at all, current infrastructure becomes overloaded, causing traffic congestion, deterioration of roads and bridges, and the inability of public transportation to meet demand. This limits economic opportunities and slows growth.
  • Academic training: The academic training of future architects continues to be, in many cases, traditional and is not aligned with modern technological demands.

Study curricula need to be updated to include computer-aided design tools and geographic information systems (GIS) from early cycles. It is also worth highlighting innovation in architecture, driven by advances such as predictive design through artificial intelligence, visualization of environments through augmented reality, digital manufacturing and the integration of Building Information Modeling (BIM). All these tools are very important for professionals in the sector and it is necessary for architects to be up to date with these innovations not only to survive, but to stand out in an increasingly competitive and demanding market.”, points out the academic.

Finally, the dean concludes that “the Universities and schools of architecture in Peru They have an essential responsibility in the training of architects capable of facing the urban challenges of the 21st century. The academy must not only provide the theoretical and technical basis, it must also encourage creativity and critical thinking in students. Innovation in architecture will not only improve the quality of life of citizens, but will also promote balanced and resilient economic growth”.
