The Regional Management of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Gercetur) of Cusco announced the launch of a program to formalize and recategorize the tourist services provided in that region in the face of the growing informality that reaches 80% and which was evident in recent weeks with the greater influx of visitors to Cusco.

Saúl Caipani Altamirano, head of Gercetur Cusco, regretted that this problem, which was even addressed at the meeting of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum (Apec) which was developed in Urubamba, has been growing in recent years.

Furthermore, he stated that the Inca citadel of Macchu Picchuin the Cusco province of Urubamba, shows the entry of up to 5,600 visitors per day, a capacity that was increased by the high season months.

This increase in the influx of visitors to this city is reflected in 75% according to studies compared to 2023, an estimate that shows that there is a reactivation of this sector after the pandemic. COVID-19 and social protests.

However, it brings into question the informality of the operators in tourismsuch as in travel agencies, hotels, restaurants and the entire chain that is activated by the arrival of visitors to the land and air terminals.

To reduce that alarming figure of 80%, the official specified that they will work with authorities linked to this sector, from the local, regional and national levels, in an articulated program to attack and will probably be tangible in the first quarter of 2025.

They even announced that they are going to recategorize the operators in services in agencies, hotels, restaurants, and will request greater work and commitment from the regional labor and transportation management, which is also responsible for inspection.

“The sector (tourism) was quite hit, we have generated and left that space and now we are starting to work on continuous improvement, now that we have the resources we are sure that all tour operators have to bet on formality,” ended.
