A storm in Chile left at least one dead and more than four thousand affected. The government declared a “state of catastrophe” and the rains are expected to continue in the coming days, especially in the south and center of the country.

The Chilean president, Gabriel Boric, said that he will assist all affected families: “All those who require support will have it. “No one has the ability to stop the rain, but we do have the ability to help.” Boric announced that he will provide bonuses of approximately 1,500 euros, depending on the damage to the home, to the affected families starting Monday so that they can recover.

According to meteorologists, the bad weather is expected to continue next week, but Boric said: “We know that we are going to have very intense rains, but we are preparing.”

Authoritarians don’t like this

The practice of professional and critical journalism is a fundamental pillar of democracy. That is why it bothers those who believe they are the owners of the truth.

The fatal victim was crushed to death by a lighting pole in the Maule region, southern Chile. The regions of Bío Bío, Ñuble and La Araucanía are among the most affected by power outages, flooded streets and overflowing rivers. At least 400 families had to leave their homes temporarily to prevent further damage and avoid facing winds, snowfall and torrential rains.

“The priority is to take care of people’s lives. I call on you to be attentive to the alerts and to pay attention to the recommendations,” asked Boric, who announced the suspension of classes in the affected areas. “We want to reduce the movement of people in cities. We ask employers to allow teleworking,” he added.

Rains also in Miami. The authorities of Miami and Fort Lauderdale also declared a state of emergency due to the heavy rains that caused significant damage in various areas of South Florida since Wednesday. The difficult weather is expected to continue, at least until next Monday, although progressively with less intensity.

Traffic was affected and it was recommended that activities scheduled to take place outdoors be suspended. The United States Weather Service warned of flooding and raised the alert to Miami Beach, Hollywood, Miami Gardens, Miami-Dade and Broward, among others.

Despite the storms, the temperature in Miami remained above 25°, even reaching 31°. Storms are expected to continue throughout the weekend and temperatures will remain high.

The floods, which damaged homes and cars, are one of the biggest problems left by the rains.
