The salary of nurses in Spain is influenced by several factors, such as the responsibility of the position, the place of work, seniority and the autonomous community in which they work. Remuneration is determined in accordance with the laws of annual budgets and regional regulations specific regulations that regulate payrolls.
Currently, nurses belong to group A2 of the salary scale, with a monthly base salary of 1,124.85 euros gross. Added to this are two extraordinary payments of 820.37 euros each and an increase of 40.83 euros for every three years of service, known as triennia. This salary has been a source of controversy due to demanding working conditions, such as night shifts and long hours.
Internationally, nurses’ salaries vary greatly. In many countries, both in Europe and in other parts of the world, salaries are notably higher than those in Spain. This difference has generated a persistent debate in the Spanish health sector, where salary shortfalls are highlighted in the face of the high demands and responsibilities of the position.
The remuneration of nursing health personnel varies according to their level of education, specialty and years of work experience accumulated and fluctuates between 41,000 and 62,000 euros gross per year.
Depending on the level of education, graduates usually earn between 2,500 and 3,000 euros per month on average, while people who graduate from a master’s degree can raise their salary to up to 3,500 euros per month.
In relation to experience, a nurse with less than two years opts for a salary of between 2,000 and 2,500 euros, while those with between five and ten years could earn between 3,000 and 3,500 euros per month. And those with more than 10 years of experience can earn more than 4,000 euros per month.
In Germany, unlike other countries such as Spain or France, nurses who work in public hospitals tend to earn less than those who work in private centers, although they have greater job security.
The base salary has a series of supplements that vary depending on the agreement and employer. Among them is the plus for the I work by turns, which is 150 euros per month; the extra pay Christmas, which is approximately 80 or 90% of the gross monthly salary; or the bonus for hours worked in night shift, Saturday afternoons, Sundays and holidays. For overtime, most hospitals give workers a bonus of between 25-50% additional for each overtime hour.
It is important to note that, according to the German Working Time Act, overtime must be paid or compensated with time off. These bonuses and additional overtime pay significantly improve the salary outlook for female healthcare workers in Germany.
